WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Why the part of your bridal appointment nobody sees matters more than you might think.

Before I open the curtain, there’s something I want to know: Do you like the dress?

It sounds obvious. But when your mom has a favorite, your best friend has a vision, and you’re still figuring out what you think, that question deserves a little privacy.

That’s why I want to talk about the part of a bridal appointment your guests don’t see. Yes, the part where we change dresses. Getting undressed with someone you just met might not be what you’re looking forward to most, but stay with me. Those few quiet minutes together are one of my favorite parts of being a bridal stylist.

While everyone on the couch is anxiously waiting for the next gown, we get a chance to regroup and refresh. A little palate cleanser between wedding dresses, if you will. And you get to look in the mirror before anyone reacts.

Sometimes, you’re noticing a sweetheart neckline or seeing how the skirt moves. Other times, it hits you: you’re looking at yourself as a bride. You might think about the younger version of you who imagined this day, the woman you are now, and the person waiting at the end of that aisle. For a minute, you get to picture marrying your person in this dress.

I want you to have that minute. And then I want to hear whatever you’re thinking. Tell me what you love, what surprised you, or what feels a little off. You don’t need to know bridal terminology or have it all figured out. “Beautiful, but not me” gives me somewhere to start! Those little conversations help me understand your personal bridal style and explain why I’m reaching for the next gown.

Then we open the curtain and bring your people into the excitement. As much as we love Aunt Joan’s thoughts on the ballgown look, I always want to hear yours first. If you’ve told me you love a dress, I might introduce it with, “This is a good one” before even allowing your guests to start sharing their opinions. 

When we come back behind the curtain, we get to take a breath. Tell me what you’re thinking now. Still smiling about that one? Want to try the first dress again? We talk it through, regroup, and give the next gown a fresh start.

And somewhere between changing dresses, we get to know each other. Tell me how you and your fiancé met, where you grew up, or about the puppy you just got, the TV show you can’t turn off at night, your celebrity crush, any and everything that excites you. We’re spending an hour and a half together, so let’s not be strangers.

This is why I love that time so much. We start with introductions, and before long, I’m invested in your wedding plans, your hobbies, and the rest of the story we didn’t quite finish before the curtain opened. With all the friends I make in this fitting room, I swear this job makes me feel like the most popular girl in the world.
